Author Paul Darlow worked as a miner at Woolley and Houghton Main collieries in the Barnsley area. He retrained and subsequently worked as a history teacher until becoming Heritage, Education and Engagement Officer for the Heritage Lottery funded Oaks Disaster 1866 Memorial project, working with community volunteers, school students and local people to produce this book.
The book is a people-focused history of England's worst mining disaster, which occurred at the Oaks Colliery, Barnsley in 1866, killing 361 miners and rescuers.
The disaster is set in the context of the Victorian society of the time, and uses the tragic events to open up unusual windows into social history.
Paul Darlow draws on his original research into contemporary accounts to weave a text of horror, humanity and humour, revealing unexpected connections and consequences that link the disaster to the present day. It includes photographs of archive documents and artefacts, many of which have never been published before.
The book forms the perfect complement to the Black Snow CD and DVD, also available on this site.
